Transponder (Chipped) Keys

Transponder keys – often called “chipped keys” or “chip keys” – are metal car keys with a small electronic chip inside the plastic head. When you turn the key, that chip sends a code to the car’s computer. If the code matches, the engine starts; if it does not, the car either will not start or dies immediately.

What a transponder / chipped key is

A transponder (chipped) key typically:

• Looks like a regular metal key with a plastic head

• Turns the ignition and/or door locks just like a mechanical key

• Has a small electronic chip in the head that talks to the car’s immobilizer

• Needs both the cut metal and the chip programming to be correct before the car will start

If the key is only cut but the chip is wrong or missing, it may unlock the doors and turn in the ignition, but the engine will not run.

What we can do with transponder / chipped keys

For most common makes and models, we can:

• Cut and program new transponder (chipped) keys when all keys are lost

• Make an additional chipped key as a spare so you are not one loss away from a tow
